Most large phone companies eliminated party lines for good between 1988 and 2000. By 2000, according to USA Today, there were still over 5,000 party lines still in existence in the U.S., but the majority of them were hooked up to only one remaining household. They were party lines in name only.
Are rotary phones still supported?
As long as those switches still support rotary dialing, and most do, the old phones will work. Fiber homes have something called an Optical Network Termination unit, or ONT, in the house that translates the light pulses into electricity that can be carried by the copper wires inside your house.
