Study #3, published in 2017: . Published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, this study supported all the initial findings. The authors concluded that: Dates fruit consumption during late pregnancy has been shown to positively affect the outcome of labour and delivery without adverse effect on the mother and child.” Side note: study suggests that eating dates after delivery results in less blood loss than intramuscular oxytocin.

Why would eating dates during pregnancy help? that date fruit has an oxytocin-like effect on the body, leading to increased sensitivity of the uterus.

Dates may also help stimulate uterine contractions and reduce postpartum hemorrhage the way oxytocin does. They also found that dates contain many nutritional benefits for pregnant mamas. “Date fruit contains saturated and unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids, which are involved in saving and supplying energy and construction of prostaglandins. In addition, serotonin, tannin, and calcium in date fruit contribute to the contraction of smooth muscles of the uterus.

Date fruit also has a laxative effect, which stimulates uterine contractions.” Dates also contain: • Natural sugars (fructose) that easily break down in the body and won’t spike blood sugar levels but will offer high energy, which makes dates during pregnancy or labor an excellent choice. • Fiber – Helps you stay full, relieves constipation, and lowers your risk for and preeclampsia.

Based on reading this article, I did eat 3-4 dates a day for the last few weeks of pregnancy. I had a 12 lb baby. That’s a good pound and a half to 2 pounds over the weight of my other babies.

I didn’t do anything else significantly different than with my previous pregnancies. I did not test positive for gestational diabetes. I did not make the connection to the dates until my friend had an 11 pound baby. She also ate 3-4 dates a day for the last few weeks.

Her babies are more on average 8-9 pounds usually. Neither of us tore, but we also didn’t have easy labor and deliveries. They were actually pretty intense. It did go fast for me, but it wasn’t painless. The baby also had shoulder dystocia and high bilirubin, partially due to bruising from coming down the birth canal so quickly and needing assistance to be born.

I would highly caution women from using dates, unless they have low birth weight babies to begin with. I will not be eating dates in the last weeks if I become pregnant again.

It is not worth it! After having the goal of having the baby to be born naturally at home, we ended up with a 5 day stay in the NICU because of jaundice… and multiple blood tests and screenings and all the trauma that involved, to be told I had a perfectly healthy newborn baby, with high bilirubin who happened to be bigger than average. Was so surprised I barely made it to the hospital. Pushed twice and she was here. The midwives made the comment that they had never seen a birth go that much faster than the first because she was bigger than my first. and wow…what a different labour and birth I had this time! I was taking a homeopathic easy birth spray ( which I had taken for my previous 3 pregnancies).

Also raspberry leaf tincture in the last few weeks. But the dates were a first for me and the main thing I did different. 6 dried dates a day for the last few weeks. From usually long labours to this time giving birth not quite one hour after arriving at the hospital.

The pain came on regular and quite intense about an hour before leaving home. I usually would give birth several hours after arriving in hospital but not so this time…..and 2nd stage was so quick. My dr. commented that my cervix was very soft at one of my last appointments before I gave birth. when the contractions started, I labored at home for 5-6 hrs. before heading to the hospital. I didn’t think my labor was that progressed but when they checked me after I arrived, I was already 7 cm. dialated! I labored for about 4 more hours and then pushed for about 2 (that was the only part I was not happy about, I wished my pushing time was shorter) but it was 13 hrs.

Thanks so much for dz article. I ate dates from 38 weeks. I felt like I started eating them late so I doubled the amount. I ate about 6-7 in the morning and another 6-7 dates in the evening. My labour was 3 hours and pushing was 5 minutes. I definitely recommend eating dates for labour. My first labour was 36 hours and I was pushing for almost 3 hours. I think it definitely helped me the second time! My last baby came in such a hurry that I had to wonder if I had eaten too many dates!

It sure seemed like they were effective. Labor began with membranes rupturing at home after weeks of false labor. Went to hospital then. I was walking the hospital halls to encourage labor to continue and 10 minutes later the nurses were racing to my room to get there in time for the delivery.

Dilation was nearly pain-free… I think I would eat dates again but would plan on going to hospital at first sign of labor. During my second pregnancy I ate 6 dates a day, starting from week 36 and drank raspberry leaf tea.

Oh boy, the delivery was quick! When we came to the hospital I was 5-6cm dilated. 30 mins later 10 cm and was able to push! When my baby boy was out I said to the doctors I could do it again. I’ve been following your blog for around four years. With my third child, I ate a Approximately eight dates daily for my entire third trimester, minus one week. I had a very drawn-out early labor of 12 hours. When things picked up, oh, did they pick up. I would try this again if I ever have another one, simply because I like dates and there’s nothing to lose. These papers were reviewed in a double-blind process for the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology before being approved for publication.

Do you think the reviewers of both articles were also biased in favour of dates? The journal is published out of Britain, and most of its editors are British and Australian. Do you think they’re biased too? By the way, do you also discredit all American research supporting the use of American-made drugs? I don’t like commenting but yours got doing just that now. These studies are just emerging of recents, however, it was mentioned over 1400 yrs back that when Mary the mother jesus (pbuh) went into labour she was sent dates by God to relieve her of the pain.

I’ve read from midwives who work with grand multips and great grand multips (mostly the Amish) that the early phase of labor for GMs and GGMs is usually days long and then active labor can go really quick?

Hi, i am on my 8th baby.. i am trying the date thing for the first time.. i usually have long early phase labors bt once in active labor i can go quick. im 36 +3 days and my babys usually come at 37 weeks for some reason ( all good sizes over 7 lbs and healthy no breathing complications ) i hope i started them early enough to see a difference.. i started at 35 weeks but i can keep you posted I’m 36 weeks today and still at work feeling great!

I have a box of rlt and would like to know when I should start the tea and dates. Last day of work is June 6th and I’m due June 14th. I want to make sure I can finish work so any recommendations on how many of each per day or week? I do not want to have this baby earlier than June 6th. I’m a teacher so it’s better this way plus I don’t have to go thru the horrible paperwork and wringer with my job if I have the baby after school is out.

Any suggestions? High amounts of magnesium have been shown to stop early labour so I would suggest having magnesium each day until June 6th then stop. As too the dates and raspberry leaf tea, you should be fine to start that now. Do you 6 dates a day but start at one cup of rlt first week, 2 cups second week and 3 cups from 6th onwards to labour ?

Goodluck I ate 6 dates a day from 36 weeks and had a pretty easy birth, although eating them didn’t stop me going over due unfortunately. My cervix however was “paper thin” and dilated steadily throughout my labour. From being in established labour my little boy was born about 7 hours later – i didn’t think that was too bad for my first! Will definitely do it again (even though I don’t really like the taste!).

It was great and such a happy, fun time, but I hated having the IV and not being able to walk until 12 hours after giving birth meant I had that IV for a long time! So I’ve been considering natural birth this time around, and want to try anything that will help it go smoothly! I ate dates last 2 pregnancies and the results were unbelievable. Melody, Just be careful with how early and how strong you start out with the dates and RLTea. I did both starting around 25 weeks and at 30 weeks I went into preterm labor! I dilated 4cm in about 3 hours and effaced to 75%.

Have been home on “bed rest”. I gave up the dates and tea for now, fearful to end up in early labor yet again. Luckily I am still pregnant now, only 9 days away from due date. Just a few days before due date I will start them both (dates & tea) again to make sure we don’t go past the due date because OB would want to induce, which I want to avoid.

But already being halfway there in terms of dilation and effacement I’m sure it will only take a day or two for me to start things back up again. I should say that the stress of work and possibly some dehydration played a role in the preterm labor scare but once it started it went so fast. I blame that on the dates and tea. Ever heard of the cascade of interventions or the bishop score? Look these up! Keep educating yourself mama. My first labor started at 40 weeks 5 days. My second was 41 weeks and SIX days! 🙂 each baby hairs their own timing. Trust your body. You can do this! I’m actually bringing someone with me and asking for a patient advocate to avoid as many interventions as possible/safe.

🙂 They won’t induce me until 10 days past the 40-week mark, and from what I’ve read, that seems reasonable. I’m just so confused because I have some signs of progressing labor, like back pain and more bathroom trips and losing the entire mucous plug, but it doesn’t feel like the baby is going anywhere.

Although all my births have been at home (and #2 and #3 were very quick – 1.5 hrs from first strong contraction to delivery), I was dreading the contractions after birth since they tend to just get more and more intense with each baby.

I don’t know if that’s helpful, and who’s to say if the dates caused the faster/easier labor or if I’d have had that anyway. I’m 36 weeks with baby #4, and I have my bag of dates sitting on the counter, definitely trying them again!! I ate dates starting around 33 weeks and had my daughter at 37.5 weeks. She is my first and I would say there is certainly a concern for having a labor that went too quickly.

I woke up around 4:50am and had her in our bathroom at home at 5:39am, less than an hour later. Everything turned out alright but it almost seemed too quick and I’m not sure whether I’d want my future births to go so fast without warning like that, especially if they are faster. I ended up getting induced, in labor for 15 hours, pushed for 2 hours, she ended up getting stuck and I had to get an episiotomy, and my poor babies shoulder was dislocated.

Very traumatizing experience… Currently pregnant with my 3rd and I have been eating dates left and right, hoping for the same outcome as my 1st labor I had the same experience – 6 dates a day the last 5 weeks or so and I was 7 cm and 100% effaced when I got to the Hospital.

Unfortunately it didn’t shorten my almost 3 hours of pushing but I definitely think it helped with going into labor on my own and a short labor overall, I will definitely be eating them again next time!
